Any unemployed librarians out there ready to take action against the ALA's recruitment drive? I'm collecting the names of people who realize that the ALA is ruining the lives and families of recent MLS grads. We need STOP THE RECRUITMENT DRIVE NOW, and we can by standing together. Want to join our little movement of rebels? Send me an e-mail - unemployedlibrarians@gmail.com

Magnificent critique regarding the oversupply of librarians in a profession that obviously provides fewer full-time (and permanent) positions for persons who worked hard to earn their MLS degrees. Perhaps those who have serious concerns about the current situation should confront the ALA at its upcoming annual conference in Chicago (June 23-29, 2005).

How's about the ALA gathers and publishes information about the current employment (and median salary!) of each cohort of graduates of each school?

Which it probably won't want to, if its real clients are the accredited schools instead of libraries or librarians. Maybe someone else can.

(It is just possible, after all, that librarians generally get excellent jobs after lengthy searches, thus making the library education expensive but worth it. One would like to see the numbers.)

Your critique is excellent. I just graduated last April, and didn't get a job until four months after I graduated (and although I have a job now, it's a temporary position and I have no idea whether they will renew my contract next year); I have another friend who graduated at the same time and is still looking for work. The Boston Globe's article leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
