I’m with you on not wanting to stay on the coast, Meredith.
My husband and I have been talking about moving to Colorado or Wyoming after I graduate and since the hurricane we have been that much more determined to do so. We live in St. Amant, about a half-hour up I-10 from New Orleans, and we are witnessing the evacuation in real time. I’m starting to get used to the helicopters, though. We’ve heard that they are evacuating animals (household pets) and they are being housed somewhere in Baton Rouge, so we’re thinking about adopting another dog.
Only time will tell how this will effect the region, since so many people won’t be going home but staying here or wherever they’ve landed. I wish I could add more, but I’m all typed out. It seems I’ve been emailing people non-stop for days. Nothing like a disaster to draw people together.

It’s too bad so many people were trapped. I came across some 2000 census data that said 27% of people in New Orleans do not own automobiles.

I share your concern for the animals at the New Orleans Zoo, so I did an extensive search on the web for news, which incidentally is how I found your entry. It appears that the zoo had an extensive plan in place, and they came through alright.
