Gee, the students in my library seem to have no trouble ignoring the "no cell phones" signs we put up! No problems there!

More seriously, I have always been under the impression that the "no food and drink" policies have more to do with keeping bugs and rodents (and the terrible damage to entire collections they can cause) out of the library than with the occassional damage to an individual book.

I'm a librarian, currently in an elementary school, formerly in a big public library, but mainly I'm a lifelong fine-paying patron. I seem to always get my books (and videos and audiobooks) back a week late. Since I always check out 4 big bags of stuff, it really adds up. I really don't like the fact that our local library never has any amnesty ever. No "bring in some cans of food for the Food Bank" fine forgiveness for Nat'l Library Week, etc. So, I pay up and try not to grumble. And I feel guilty and never seem to do better. But the little library in another county (with the fabulous collection) has a "Teacher Card" and doesn't charge teachers fines. I drive 45 minutes each way and give them hefty donations several times a year. I think I'll even put them in my will.
