The thing to do with "undeserved" wealth (and I meant those scare quotes!) is to try to spread it to others. Goodness knows you do plenty of that, Meredith, so I wouldn't worry if I were you.

As for living up to putative hype, I think part of the reason you have hype swirling around you is that you're a pleasant person who's easy to work with. Believe me, that counts for a lot! So the way you live up to that is -- just being you.

There's a lot to be said for randomness--particularly for those of us who are too shy and withdrawing to be "brash and fearless and make sure the 'right people' notice us.'"

If I'd been able to find a Proper Expert to write the "book on MARC" that I knew was needed in the early 1980s, I would probably never have started writing books in librarianship (nobody asked me to back then). If I hadn't been chatting with someone on the ALA exhibit floor in 1984 about the peculiarities of PC price advertising, I would probably have never started writing lots of articles and columns (and might have resisted a colleague's push to apply for LITA Newsletter editor).

Heck, if I hadn't started working as a library page at UC Berkeley because anything had to be better than being a busboy, I might never have gotten into library work at all.

You have talent and energy. Some of the time, that bears results. And you'll probably find a balance, maybe sooner, maybe later. (Not that balances don't come undone from time to time!)

Oh, did I mention that if I hadn't met a certain library school student, at work, in a somewhat random situation, in late 1977 (and asked her out, and married her), none of the writing or speaking or editing or professional activity might have happened?
