Hi Meredith,

Great analysis of online collaboration! I'd like to recommend Yugma (http://www.yugma.com) for remote desktop sharing, loaded with tons of other features like whiteboard, file sharing, session record/upload, chat, etc. Plus, it works for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It seems like it would be a great fit for you, hope you like it!

I used to think many f2f meetings were a waste of time, until I started working for an international company with offices all over the world. The majority of our collaborative work is done online via chats, internal wikis, and the occasional conference call.

But once a year (at least) we try to have a global departmental meeting in person. And it really clears the air. Once can often see that what looked like someone being rude or restrictive online was merely a bad translation of cultural differences. It makes things a lot more productive to be able to look and talk to people, both officially and in casual moments.

It's also nice that we have entire days to spend together, working on certain topics. When you're global, the online participation is lmiited by time. Yes, it's nice to have it all online for group contributions, but you may have to wait a while before you see that participation. And conference calls rarely go well, as it's often 11 PM for one office and 5 AM for another (and many dozen in between)!

Is F2F always necessary? No. But is it useful? Definitely.
