Meredith wrote: "A number of people in the "other" comments state that they write blogs that are both personal and professional, and that’s how many blogs are."

I believe I was one of those others who said both in the comments. As best I can, I'd like to answer your questions.

"... do you feel that this represents you professionally?" Only partly. As in it only represents part of my professional identity (whatever the heck that might be) and it clearly does not at times; e.g., silly web quizzes, movie or music reviews (since I have no idea how to review either in a normal sense of "review," ....)

"Would you put it on your resume? If so, it’s professional. If not, it’s personal." I did, and I'm not sure I agree with your take. ;) I recently applied to two jobs and one of the places had me come talk to them earlier this year based on some "reporting" I did on my blog, so they are well aware of it. Whenever anyone Google's me--assuming they find this Mark Lindner--they are mostly going to find my blog. Thus, it would be silly to ignore that it exists, in my mind. So I listed it as "my personal and professional blog." Because it is both.

"What do you consider the dividing line between a personal and a professional blog?" Absolutely no idea! See my above answer as to my conflicted nature. Sometimes it is quite easy to say this or that blog is one or the other, but most of the blogs that I enjoy reading I have no idea how to draw a line.

That stat regarding multiple contributions seems amazing! I don't remember the exact question, but I wonder how folks parsed out "contribute."

Again, thanks for doing this work.

Hi Meredith,

AFAIK there are no studies looking at how many librarians publish generally - I've been trying to find this out for an article I'm writing about the motivation of newly graduated librarians to publish (particularly outside of the tenure system, which doesn't exist outside the US).

What we need (and others have been starting to say too) is a group who can track who publishes, why, what opportunities are out there, and what can be done to improve the quality of the literature etc.

I plan to use some of your results for a <a href="http://librariesinteract.info/2007/08/17/vala2008-conference-programme/" rel="nofollow">conference paper about group blogging</a> if that's ok with you!
