I read this post just before I went to a two-day conference in Gosford (NSW). Great conference, but your comment about speakers and enthusiasm really hit home. Also discussions about what we want from a conference – something we’re always asking here in Oz, where there are fewer of us, and the distances are so much greater …

I’m so sad! A country girl at heart! Does that mean you won’t be moving out to the UC anytime soon… Maybe you’d consider Santa Barbara! It’s a tiny town, especially compared to Berkeley, LA, Chicago, NYC! I’m not sure why you felt intimidated at UC Berkeley because you really shined. I loved your talk and I suffer from technolust too. I agree with Emily up above… something between IL and Code4Lib would be soooo nice! Thanks for coming even if it was only for a visit! See you around in the cyberworld until the next conference!

Techie non-coder? Yes Please. With a simultaneous virtual track.

In Australia, we don’t have the code4lib level at all so it is a struggle to seek out talks which push the boundaries beyond review.

And I hear you on being star-struck at times – I’ve asked for pictures a couple of times, rock star style

I really do enjoy Internet Librarian, but so much of the material covered in the conference is a review for me.

I think that part of this is because the same sessions are recycled over and over at IL & CIL. I love going for the same reason you do – to see the people after hours – but whenever I try to offer up an in between what the IL people and the Code4Lib people talk about it gets overlooked (not that I minded this year – I had way too much to do!!).

Form a group to talk about that. People can submit what they would like to discuss and other people can sign up if they’re interested in talking about that. The person who proposed it isn’t the speaker or even the facilitator; it’s just a free and open discussion. Everyone is simultaneously the teacher and the learner.

I think that Library Camp is the solution to your problem. Everyone makes the program and it’s all groups of people sitting around chatting – not presenting! I loved my NYC Library Camp experience.

P.S. Michael Buckland is a really nice guy, but I know how you feel cause I act pretty much the same way even though I’ve met him several times now.

And, yes, that is some interesting work they’re doing.
