Maybe it's time for some in the library profession to do this kind of thing without ALA. They haven't exactly been open to this kind of reform (as you point out) without forming committee after committee. Maybe we (the general we) should follow your husband and father-in-law's example and create this kind of thing outside the primary established organization.

Hmm, that does sound like an idea that could work. I pretty much ignore the ACRL webinar announcements given their cost (in some cases, hideously expensive). Like you point out, for $100 (or more), I want more than some glossy fluff magazine. Sure, ALA may fight for intellectual freedom and all, but if that is all, I can think of a few other organizations that do that I can give my money too instead.

I would love to see that guest post and hear more of how they did it. If they can do it, I am sure ALA could (if they had the will, that is).

Best, and keep on blogging.

Great idea, but for the moment we probably should forget about alternative funding streams for ALA. How about alternative funding streams for public libraries! The taxpayers feel maxed out and libraries operate on shoestring budgets. Our generation will need to prevent public library closures, so we better get to work on alternative revenue streams.
