Something you wrote a few months ago about how you possition yourself as a young professional resonated with me. I am three years out of LIS school and am just recently starting to find success publishing/presenting on instructional games in libraries. You have been an inspiration to me!

Congratulations for your professional and personal successes!

Very good post and very encourage. Being in San Jose too and seeing the recession hit US hard, we started this blog to help people to get through tough times during recession and be financially smart. Why not?

You don't know me but I'm a reference librarian at San Jose's King Library (SJSU/SJPL) who follows your blog. You're an amazing writer and instructor, and most exceptionally qualified for this award. Hearty congratulations on this lofty recognition of your work, and on embarking on the ultimate experience in communication and teaching: parenting! My own baby is about to turn 14, and I couldn't have put it better than Laurel Eby, who stated above that "the days are long (I'd add particularly in the early years) but the years are short!" Warmest wishes to you.

Amazingly well said! "The only limits to what you can accomplish are your own imagination and belief in yourself" is the key to personal achievement as well as the way to welcoming new opportunities and embracing change in our work as librarians.

Thanks, Meredith and congratulations on your award!

Meredith, I can think of no one who deserves this award more, so I am gratified that you got it. Thank you for the shout-out as one of your mentors, but to me it is simply passing along the mentorship love that was given to me. Along my professional pathway I've had people who were well-established in the profession help me out (see http://techinlibraries.com/ for a case in point) and I really don't believe that anyone achieves success alone. So if I can participate in a chain of mentorship I think it helps me, it helps you, and it helps the profession as a whole. We need to foster young talent coming up through the ranks, of which you are a prime example.

As for children and career, I agree with my friend and colleague Chrystie (another young talent since we're on the subject), that balance is a good thing. Maybe it's the people I hang out with, but no one I know regrets their decision to have children. It's hard to handle both a career and family, but it is also tremendously gratifying, and one part of your life can serve to prop you up when the other part of your life is going through hard times. And they will.

So thanks for the recognition as someone who has in the past, and will in the future, be a source of professional support for you. But from where I sit it looks more like a mutual admiration society. Congratulations!

It was very encouraging for me to read your words, as I am myself reluctant to trust myself in unfamiliar circumstances. While that brilliant but simple piece of technology, the book, is quite familiar to and well loved by me, in more recent variations on this theme using comparatively new but well established media I am a novice.

You are clearly both articulate and intelligent as well as kind (sorry if I both flatter and make assumptions not justified on so short an online acquaintance; sometimes words give the illusion of a longer and deeper friendship (sorry to again be quite appalling presumptuous) than in fact exists.
