Meredith Farkas is a faculty librarian at Portland Community College in Oregon. She was previously the Head of Instructional Services at Portland State University where she was engaged in building and assessing new approaches to instruction as well as building online tutorials and learning tools to support online and face-to-face courses. For her work in leading the development of Library DIY at Portland State, she was honored with the 2014 ACRL Instruction Section Innovation Award. Meredith is also a lecturer at San Jose State University’s iSchool where she teaches courses on embedding librarians and the library into the fabric of higher education. For her teaching, she was honored in 2008 and 2011 with the WISE Excellence in Online Education Award. She is the author of the book Social Software in Libraries: Building Collaboration, Communication and Community Online (2007), the first book on applying social media in libraries, and writes the monthly column “Technology in Practice” for American Libraries. She frequently publishes and speaks internationally on topics related to her research. Meredith’s research interests include online pedagogy and instructional design; the impact of social media on research, teaching and learning; mobile technologies in learning; building a culture of assessment in libraries; the research habits and needs of returning students; and organizational cultures that support innovation. Over the past three years, she has received over $20,000 in grants for assessment work, research on returning student research needs, and the creation of learning objects to support library instruction. She is the author of the popular blog Information Want to be Free where she writes about trends in the profession and her own professional experiences. Meredith is also the founder and manager of Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki, which is a major professional knowledge base that has collected information from thousands of librarians. For her efforts to improve professional knowledge-sharing, she was honored with the LITA/Library Hi Tech award for Outstanding Communication in Library and Information Technology in 2009.
