David showed a whole bunch of library Websites that give users a really bad experience. There was one where they actually asked users whether they wanted a Flash or HTML Web site before they could get to the front page. Crazy! Then he showed Flickr and how when they went down, they were honest and transparent about it and had a contest to give users a fun experience. While people could have been mad that Flickr was down, instead, they had a lot of fun. It\u2019s all about the way we design our experience.<\/p>\n

We want users to focus on themselves, on finding what they want.<\/p>\n

David recommends Jesse James Garrett\u2019s \u201cThe Elements of User Experience<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

Five Elements of User Experience Design:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Strategy \u2013 planning <\/li>\n
  2. Scope \u2013 focus on what content is needed on the site and what functional specs you need. Who will do what. <\/li>\n
  3. Structure \u2013 Interaction design (application flows for user tasks, the process to complete a task). Information architecture. Fill in the details. <\/li>\n
  4. Skeleton \u2013 wire-framing. You\u2019re focused on where the information will appear on the page. Layout. Outline of the site. <\/li>\n
  5. Surface \u2013 Visual design of the site. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Experience Economy \u2013 new concept in the marketing and architecture world. <\/p>\n

    Types of experiences:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Memorable <\/li>\n
    2. Choreographed<\/li>\n
    3. Positive<\/li>\n
    4. Invisible \u2013 things you don\u2019t notice because they work so well. You shouldn\u2019t notice a Web site. You want to connect with the information not the Web site.<\/li>\n
    5. Negative<\/li>\n
    6. Ordinary<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      How to do this:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Ask the user – Ask your patrons what they\u2019d like to see change. Ask your staff what they\u2019d like to see change or what they\u2019d like us to provide to patrons. Remember that the needs of staff and patrons can often be different. <\/li>\n
      2. Help the user to save extra steps. What extra steps exist on your Web site? How can you make it as easy as possible for users to do what they want to do?\n<\/li>\n
      3. Find trigger points \u2013 what makes someone like or hate the experience? What do you not like about our site? How can we improve that? <\/li>\n
      4. Improve the dinosaurs \u2013 find something that hasn\u2019t changed in a long time and make it better<\/li>\n
      5. Map a journey \u2013 understand a customer\u2019s journey on their site and their state of mind. <\/li>\n
      6. Merit badging \u2013 people are collecting experiences, rather than things. <\/li>\n
      7. Focused design \u2013 seamless and focused with your design. No hiccups. Remove distractions. Consistent look and feel. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
